Tony Williams, singer, born Elizabeth New Jersey 15 April 1928, died New York City 14 August 1992. Joined by guitarist John McLaughlin, Williams then formed the Tony Williams Lifetime, one of the first and most-praised jazz-rock groups. More known as Tony Williams by drummers around the world. After a few years of inactivity (1973-75), he formed a second Lifetime but spent most of the rest of his career with straightforward jazz groups, including V.S.O.P., a reunion band of former Davis sidemen, with the Great Jazz Trio, and with his own combos. Featuring a smooth sophisticated sound and the superb lead tenor of Tony Williams, the Platters were among the most successful black vocal groups of the '50s. One of the first such groups regularly to ascend the pop charts and enjoy massive popularity with white audiences, the Platters helped launch doo wop music and influenced generations of vocal groups with their harmonies and arrangements.
