Re: Driving up Remarkables??? You can either drive yourself or catch a ride on The Remarkable's Bus transport from outside the Snow Centre on Duke St in Central Queenstown. Can you drive to the Remarkables? Chains definitely need to be carried and at the turn off to the ski field on Kingston Rd (State Highway 6), there is an electronic sign that indicates the road status, whether the chain fitting service is in operation, and which car parks are full.
12 years ago Even with a 4WD you will need to fit chains if they are deemed necessary. Getting to The Remarkables is easy; we're a scenic 24km from Central Queenstown. I haven't driven up the Remarkables in winter but my experience on other skifield access roads, it isn't the locals you need to look out for, but the inexperienced visitors who are unused to mountain roads, unused to snow and unused to steep drop-offs so they drive slowly in the centre of the two lane roads and hold up all traffic in both directions. The Remarkables road is a 13,2km (8.2mi) scenic journey climbing up to the Remarkables ski fields, at an elevation of 1.622m (5,321ft) above the sea level, located in Otago, South Island of New Zealand.
The road up remarkables isn't that bad at all relative to a lot of other gravel roads in NZ, it's wide as hell too. IMO 4WD is not much better than 2WD unless you are in deep snow, and this is seldom the case on the ski field roads as they are usually graded before they give the skiers access. It’s one of the highest roads in the country.
