This ancient constellation is depicted as the larger of Orion’s two hunting dogs, the other being Canis Minor. Its name means “the greater dog” in Latin. Constellation Canis Major the Greater Dog, sits south of constellation Gemini, between constellation Orion and constellation Argo Navis. Canis Major can be seen following obediently behind Orion, a hunter in Greek mythology, on his journey across the sky. The dog is often depicted pursuing a hare, represented by the constellation Lepus. Canis Major is a constellation in the southern sky. Canis Major is not a member of the Zodiac group of twelve constellations that appear when the Sun sets. Canis Major is a southern celestial hemispheric constellation.
